Salep-Sahlep, also known as "orchis mascula" in the scientific field, is an orchid plant variety known to emerge in spring. The most common variety of salep usually has purple flowers, but there are also varieties with pure white flowers. Salep can reach 50-60 cm in length.
Salep is from the orchid family. Orchid is also known as salepaceae. Orchid has 880 genera and more than 22 thousand species. Salep is used for all kinds of orchids in our culture. Salep is obtained from the underground tubers of this orchid bulb. The root of saleb, which is a herbaceous plant, is fibrous and has at least 2 tubers in its root. Salep tubers contain a starch-like polysaccharide called glucomannan. Its body is upright and cylindrical. The flowers may be in clusters or pointed.
The salep plant, which grows spontaneously in the mountains of Bucak and its surroundings and is collected between April and June, is called salep, orchid root and salep orchid.
Bucak salep is completely natural as it grows by itself in nature. Bucak salep, which is collected between April and June, is thoroughly washed and dried in a sun-free environment. Then it is soil.

Today, Salep agriculture has spread to many of our villages as an agricultural activity. With the support of local governments, it is suitable for idle agricultural lands, especially in forest villages.
